QuestionsChoosing a policy

How much disability coverage can I get as an attending?

Jay Weinberg, CLU, ChFCPhysician disability insurance specialist · PGY1 Financial Solutions

Short answer

Most physicians I work with are eligible for somewhere between $10,000 and $15,000 a month, depending on income and whether your employer gives you a group policy. Very high earners may qualify for more. Most GSI policies cap increases at around $15,000 a month.

What most physicians qualify for

$15,000 a month is a very large policy. Most physicians I work with don't, and won't ever, qualify for $15,000 a month of coverage. Most are eligible for somewhere between $10,000 and $15,000 a month. Where you land depends on your income, and on whether you get a group disability policy from your employer.

Where the GSI cap fits

Most GSI policies cap how high you can increase your coverage, commonly at $15,000 a month, assuming the policy is structured properly. As a resident that cap doesn't mean much. It matters when you're about to be an attending and want to increase your coverage.

Higher earning specialties

If you're in a very high earning potential field, you may be eligible for more than $15,000 of coverage. There are strategies for that, and it's worth talking through on an individual basis.
