QuestionsGSI policies

Should I apply for a medically underwritten policy before checking for GSI?

Jay Weinberg, CLU, ChFCPhysician disability insurance specialist · PGY1 Financial Solutions

Short answer

No. Most GSI policies ask whether you've previously applied for disability insurance, and if you have, there's a good chance you won't be eligible. If a GSI policy might suit you, get it before completing any application that asks health questions.

The knockout question

Most GSI policies ask whether you've previously applied for a disability insurance policy. There may be exceptions, but if you have applied, you're likely closing the door on the GSI.

Four steps before you apply

  1. Find out if there's a GSI policy available to residents and fellows where you're training.
  2. Find an insurance professional who can offer that GSI. Very few can, and sometimes only one at a given institution. Make sure they can also offer a medically underwritten policy, so you can talk through both and pick what makes sense.
  3. If a GSI looks like a good fit, don't complete a medically underwritten application first.
  4. Work with someone who specializes in physician disability insurance. Everybody knows somebody who sells insurance, but very few specialize in this.

Two questions to ask any insurance professional

Before you engage anyone, ask: Is there a GSI policy available to the residents at my hospital? And if there is, can you offer it to me? If they can't, ask them to point you to the person who can.
